15 kilometres south of us is Bourganeuf, the first town in France to have electricity – there is even a museum about it. The market day is Wednesday.
There are numerous restaurants in both towns although Guéret is bigger and has more choice. Our nearest restaurant is 10 minutes away serving delicious Creusois dishes, the nearest bars (3) are in Sardent, a 5 minute drive where there is also a church, post office, chemist, supermarket and public phone box. There is also a lake on the outskirts in which you can swim if you don’t mind reeds around your feet.
Follow in the footsteps of Monet and visit Fresselines with its artists studios and Crozant with its ruined castle and River Creuse. Aubusson is famous for tapestries – see how they are made and old ones repaired.
During the year there are all kinds of fetes celebrating a variety of products – apples, pumpkins, potatoes, cheese, oysters and mussels for example – in the surrounding villages and most have car boot sales too. The local specialities are on sale at these and should not be missed!
The scenery in this area is superb and wild flowers, animals and birds are everywhere.
